Designing for Physical and Mental Well-Being

Did you ever hear the adage happy wife happy life? Well, the same ideal should be used when you design a well-oiled butt kicking office space. Rather than taking every cheap shortcut to save on the almighty dollar let’s step up our game.

Here are 3 of the big afflictions that I have noted throughout my time designing office spaces.

Clutter or Cleanliness is next to Godliness

Positive clear energy is key to every office space. There is nothing worse then having your ability to think stunted by clutter.  When you are not producing you are not making money. Which bottom line means you are not adding to your bottom line! That becomes a vicious cycle.

1. Keep surfaces clear and everything in its own place. Clear your desk each day before you leave the office.

3. Make sure you have current actionable file folders and resources folders at hand to do your day to day work.


Light and Life



130 million workdays are lost to illness every year. Adding plants increases air quality, which can reduce absenteeism by 50% and reduce minor illnesses by 30%.

Natural light is critical in an office environment. It reduces fatigue and eye while improving performance and positive mood. Who wants grumpy employees at work? It even improves your employee’s ability to sleep at night which means they are more productive at work the next day. If certain interior office areas don’t have windows, you can change out your bulbs to full spectrum lighting.

Get Social

Social interaction and friendships with colleagues should be encouraged.

So why is it, more often than not we end up seeing office spaces designed to enclose individuals?

Add open concept gathering areas to bring employees together. The overall ebb and flow of an office space should allow for the free sharing of ideas. You should always feel your most creative when in your workspace.
